Nature’s Palette Painting Workshop with Laura Leigh

Ages 15+
Experience Level All experience levels.

Class Description

Join Hudson Valley artist Laura Leigh to learn how to create organic, high-quality watercolor paints using minerals and clay from the Catskill and Adirondack Mountains.

In this workshop, Laura Leigh will guide you through the traditional method of creating watercolor paint from Catskill and Appalachian ochres—from gathering stones and milling pigments to incorporating the paints into your own painting practice. Laura will also discuss basic geology, pigment history, safe handling procedures, and the locations where she sources her ochre.

Each student will have the opportunity to create two watercolor palettes to take home, and explore Laura’s ochre selection that she has been carefully collecting since 2014. The end of the workshop will feature some basic watercolor exercises and an open-paint session with pigments, charcoal and watercolor mediums. Laura can guide you to create your own painting based on nature, imagination, or a reference photo.

This workshop blends creativity and science, and is open to artists and non-artists alike—perfect for adults and mature teens.
