Ceramic Christmas Ornaments with Morin Bissonette

Class Description

Learn some fundamental ceramics skills and leave with 5 Christmas ornaments!

Skills Learned:

Class Timeline

Day 1
Tuesday, December 16 at 6 pm

Students will wedge their clay, create a slab, and cut out ornaments, adding a hole for hanging. You will learn stamping and slip trailing techniques, and prepare one ornament with colored slip of your choice for sgraffito. Morin will demonstrate the sgraffito method and explain the stages of clay through photos. Some ornaments will need to dry before carving.


Day 2
Thursday, December 18 at 6-7 pm

Students will finish their ornaments by cleaning them up and adding their initials and date to the back. You will also have the opportunity to add clay for texture. Techniques in carving, slip and scoring will be demonstrated as you complete your sgraffito ornament.

Between Day 2 and Day 3 student artwork will be bisk fired.


Day 3
Saturday, December 20 at 4:30-5:30 pm

On the final day, students will glaze their pieces and learn proper glazing techniques and tips. Finished work can be picked up at designated times during the following week.

About the Instructor

Ceramist and Sculptor, Morin Bissonette, grew up in Lake Placid where she fell in love with many types of art such as dance, ceramics, and generally creating. As it happens Morin’s first time taking a ceramic class was right at the Lake Placid Center for the Arts making her position at the Arts Center very full circle. Morin went on to get a Bachelor of Fine Arts at SUNY Plattsburgh where she concentrated in ceramics and sculpture. Her work focuses on the process of creating and bringing one back to their inner child. Furthermore she enjoys experimenting with different methods and mediums.
